Miarayon, Talakag, Bukidnon
The Miarayon region, a community of
tribal minorities, is located in
the southeastern section of Malaybalay under the province of
Bukidnon. It belongs
to the municipality of Talakag. The total land area of
the region comprises six (6) barangays (i.e. Baylanan, Lapok, Miarayon,
Lirongan, San Miguel, Tagbak) of approximately 22,619 hectares with a
population of approximately 5,000

families. The inhabitants of
the Miarayon region include 80% Talaandig-Bukidnons; 15% Dumagats
("taga-dagat' or "migrants from the sea" and other Christian settlers);
4% Maranaws/Muslims; and 1% Igorots.
1.
MIARAYON CENTRO,
MIARAYON, TALAKAG, BUKIDNON
This area has a population of about 3,000 families of Tala-Andig
Origin. The local dialect is Binukid. This area has limited access to
electricity, no running water, no cemented roads and may be reached
only through motorcycles. The crops grown here are potatoes, carrots,
cabbage, cassava and some coffee.
Cartwheel
is currently running
three programs here:
A.
STA. TERESITA PRE-SCHOOL:
Established by Cartwheel in 1999. Beneficiaries number up to 130.
B. SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Started in 1999. Beneficiaries number up to 20
high school and college students annually.
C. TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM: Started in 1999. Beneficiaries are up to 5
Lumad (indigenous) teachers providing instruction to pre-school and
high school students.
2. SITIO ABEL, MIARAYON, TALAKAG,
BUKIDNON
Sitio Abel is 40 minutes by foot from Miarayon Centro. There are
approximately 1,000 families in this area. There are no schools
in this area other than those run by Cartwheel.
Three
programs are also run here:
A.
PRE-SCHOOL OPERATIONS: Started
in June 2001. Beneficiaries number up to 70 students.
B. EMERGENCY FEEDING PROGRAM: Started in June 2002. Beneficiaries
number up to 150+ malnourished children.
C. ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM: Started in June 2002 for the parents of
pre-schoolers, and other adults with no literacy skills. Beneficiaries
number up to 150 adults in 2 years. Program includes Basic Literacy,
Elementary Certification and Health and Nutrition Education

We currently provide financial and technical
assistance (such as teacher training, scholarships and art workshops to
four other communities, namely:
